Playoff?

Posted on: January 15, 2008 8:21 am

Did you see this story this morning: http://www.sportsline.com/collegefootball/story/10576905

Somebody at the NCAA actually proposed a playoff? In Division I-A? Are you kidding me?

I'm not surprised it was Georgia president Michael Adams, considering he felt his team was one of the best in the nation. Would he have proposed a playoff if his team was say ... 7-5? Or what about if the Bulldogs beat Ohio State to win the BCS crown. Would he have done the same thing? Probably not.

But either way, its good to see the NCAA Board of Directors is going to study the possibility of it happening.

His playoff proposal of the Sugar, Orange, Rose and Fiesta bowls as the opening round is horrendous. I mean, the first round is the Fiesta Bowl? So what is the semifinal round? Motor City Bowl? That proposal will never happen, but maybe if he tweaked to say first-round games at higher-seeded schools' sites and then use the bowls the rest of the way is more likely.

Ahhh, who are we kidding. None of it is more likely. We all know deep down the presidents and the BCS are never going to go for this.

Playoff?

They could do a 6 team playoff (top two teams receive first round byes) which would give us five games just like we have now in the BCS. The Rose Bowl could be the National Championship, and the other four games could be the Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Orange Bowl, and Sugar Bowl, then the rest of the teams can play their less important bowl games like they still do now and we'd still have the Florida-Michigan matchups, etc. However instead of stinkers like LSU-OSU, we'd have a much, much higher anticipated National Championship game and end the season without controversy (USC-LSU anyone?) like college basketball and Division 1-A does

And why do BCS supporters keep saying "every game counts"? Did LSU's two losses count? What about Boise State's 13 wins a year ago? The worst thing about the BCS is that every game does not count, something a playoff would fix. With a playoff the only game last season that wouldn't have counted was OSU's loss to Illinois because with it or without it, they would've still been the #1 overall seed

Although Michael Adams' suggestion isn't ideal, it would be a huge step forward for college football. Though I would have to agree, the BCS conferences pretty much have the NCAA handcuffed and with a playoff format not being in their best interest I don't see college football adopting one for a long time

And why do BCS supporters keep saying "every game counts"?

That's the most idiotic statement from the BCS. The games count, or the regular-season is a playoff -- well, then LSU would have been eliminated the last week of the regular season by losing to Arkansas. LSU just proved losing late means nothing.

One thing is for sure like you said -- once Jerry Jones gets that new stadium built in Dallas -- the Cotton Bowl is getting some piece of this BCS pie. Either a major bowl or a playoff game.

I just don't understand why people can't see some sort of playoff being amazing for the sport.

Playoff?

The regular season games do count. With all the talk of loses on this message board it appears everyone wants to overlook wins. Of the top 8 teams everyone is claiming  to deserve a shot at the prize LSU had the best case. Against the final  AP top 15 LSU is 5-0, Georga is 2-1, USC is 0-0, tOS is 0-1,West Virginia 1-0,Kansas 1-1,Oklahoma 2-1. The results would be similar if the BCS final rankings were used. No matter how you format a playoff someone will be left out. It probably is time to start a playoff but I think the best team  did win the BCS championship this year .

But that's the problem, we don't know for sure. It's all based on opinions. We dont' REALLY know if USC or Georgia is better than LSU. We can guess or have an opinion, but college football needs to stop crowning champions based on opinions.
