Isenhour apologizes for killing hawk; Humane Society taking action

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Pro golfer Tripp Isenhour apologized for killing a hawk that was making noise while he tried to film a TV show. Now the Humane Society wants the PGA Tour to take action.

"Because of the high profile nature of this case, the PGA needs to take steps to address its interest and to make it clear that they don't condone animal cruelty," said Dale Bartlett, the deputy manager for animal cruelty issues for the Humane Society of the United States.

Bartlett said the organization would contact the PGA Tour on Friday to discuss the issue.

Isenhour, who plays on the developmental Nationwide Tour, was charged Wednesday with cruelty to animals and killing a migratory bird, misdemeanors that carry a maximum penalty of 14 months in jail and $1,500 in fines.

Isenhour quickly apologized Thursday.

"As soon as this happened, I was mortified and extremely upset and continue to be upset," Isenhour said in a statement issued through his management company, SFX Golf. "I want to let everyone know there was neither any malice nor deliberate intent whatsoever to hit or harm the hawk. I was trying to simply scare it into flying away."

The 39-year-old player, whose real name is John Henry Isenhour III, became angry while filming "Shoot Like A Pro" on Dec. 12 at the Grand Cypress Golf Club when a squawking red-shouldered hawk roughly 300 yards away forced another take.

He drove closer to the bird in his golf cart and starting hitting balls at it. The bird didn't move and Isenhour gave up and drove away.

Isenhour started again when the hawk moved within about 75 yards, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer Brian Baine indicated in a report.

Isenhour allegedly said, "I'll get him now," and aimed for the hawk.

"About the sixth ball came very near the bird's head, and (Isenhour) was very excited that it was so close," Baine wrote.

A few shots later, witnesses said he hit the hawk. The bird, protected as a migratory species, fell to the ground bleeding from both nostrils.

Tripp Isenhour should pay dearly.  The crimes he has commited against humanity and animality are appalling.  He should be swung from the gallows.  Never in my life have I heard of such an awful deed.  To repeatedly hit balls directly at a bird.  A BIRD I tell you.  Can you imagine the horror in that birds mind as balls kept landing closer to it.  He was probab ...(more)

If this guy was as accurate at hitting the pin as he is as hitting birds, maybe somebody might know who the hell this guy is.

Golf is still incredibly g-a-y

Tiger Woods might be in shape, but golfers can not be considered athletes.

AND its a one man, skill sport... it takes talent... and its difficult.... for michael jordan to say golf is harder than basketball... ...(more)

Since the bird is on theendangered species list lets see if the feds make a big deal out of it . We will also see how much P.E.T.A. goes along with this since this is a semi high profile athlete killing a defenseless animal for no apparent reason than it was doing what came naturally to it.

......you wouldn't have done this in the first place.

I'm soooooo tired of hearing a person (in this case, a sports figure) give this beautiful apology 24 hours after doing something wrong -- when (of course) at the time it seemed like the right thing to do.  They even sound genuine and contrite and might shed a tear.  In many cases, they are sorry ...(more)

Dont worry, this will cost him a lot more than $1500  when he loses sponsors and has to start paying his own costs on the tour.      What a jerk.

This is the most retarted thing ever! He killed a bird by hitting golf balls at it so what, It dosent matter if he wanted to hit it! I know hes a pro golfer but the chances of a hittng a bird that size are pretty slim. The stupid animal rights people need to F!#K OFF!!

I hope they throw him in the slammer for awhile...I have no problem with people who hunt/fish, but killing an animal just for fun is wrong, especially when the bird is endangered.

He delibertly continued to aim at this protected bird until the bird paid the ultimate price. He should spend 14 months and pay $1,500. But, I believe the penalty should be tripled because of the precedence of the number of witnesses and the number of attempts to commit the crime.

Sounds like self-defense to me..."the hawk then moved to withing 75 yards"........?  Clearly a case of stalking and justifiable homicide....

Cmon this really isnt a big deal, I'm suprised the hawk wasnt shot by security or something.  Also it's not like he meant to actually kill the damn thing, just wanted to shoo it away.

Anyone can take about 15 shots at a defenseless bird only 100 feet away. But no one else could pull off the shot that Tiger did.
