All American Football League on verge of scrapping first season

ATLANTA -- The new All American Football League will postpone its 2008 season unless it finds additional financial backing.

The announcement Thursday came less than a week before camps were to open for the six-team league.

The league, which held its inaugural draft in January, has rosters and staffs in place for six teams: Detroit; Little Rock, Ark; Gainesville, Fla.; Birmingham, Ala.; Knoxville, Tenn., and Houston.

Training camps were scheduled to open Wednesday, followed by the first games in April.

The league will push its plans back to 2009 unless it secures a TV deal or other funding.

The league announced Thursday it was exploring "multiple financing options" to address its funding crisis.

League chief executive officer Marcus Katz said Thursday night that discussions continue with several prospective investors. A statement released by the league and attributed to Katz said the start of preseason training camps will be "delayed briefly" with plans for games to begin on April 12.

The AAFL was formed to fill the void created when the NFL shut down NFL Europe earlier this year after 16 seasons. That league was losing a reported $30 million a season, and now the AAFL, lacking a TV deal, also faces a financial crisis before it can stage its first game.

Among the first players drafted on Jan. 26 were quarterbacks Bryan Randall, by Tennessee, and Eric Crouch, by Texas. Former Troy offensive lineman Zarah Yisrael was drafted No. 1 overall by Arkansas.

According to a statement released by the league, the AAFL's financial problems are tied to the national subprime mortgage crisis.

Katz co-founded a company that provides student loans.

The statement said camps would open Wednesday "if liquidity can be immediately restored."

If not, plans for an inaugural season will be pushed back to 2009.

the NCAA and NFL are perfect as it is right now for Football in the United States and no league will ever have a chance to match the NFL.

Why not turn it into a minor league NFL where teams can have a player tied to their organization.  Make it a developmental league in smaller markets.  They could broadcast games on the NFL network during the spring and summer, and would provide those players that weren't impressive at the combine a chance to show teams that they have talent and could be useful assets in the "Big Lea ...(more)

Perhaps the saddest thing is that I live in Birmingham, and didn't know we were supposed to have a team.  Either I need to get out more (definite possibility) or they didn't promote that team very well.  Oh well.

Which of these do you miss the most.  If I missed one, please reply to the post.

i strongly agree that it should be a minor league nfl tied to teams. but how can u call them washed up players? theyre not old players past their prime, theyre star players who barely got a shot in the nfl. i dont know if it will fail or not but it would more likely not fail if it were more like a minor league nfl

Let's start another football league.  The NFL is on top of the world right now.  I'd like to who the guys are that thought the NFL might be right for the picking.  This or any rival league has no chance in hell at this point.  What a waste of time and money!

Marketing for the new league was amatuer.  Chris Leak the most highly decorated player they have playing did not get much press at all.  Then to find out he was drafted after Kessler, made me lose interest real quick.  Chris may not be a superstar but he is a NC winner who broke more records at Florida than Kessler.  I don't care if he only plays three snaps, you promote ...(more)

Dear Owners/Investors of this league:  Save your money -- this has never worked.  People might tune in for the first game, and then it's downhill from there.

Who cares? This leage is going to fail like all the others. They have financial problems before the season starts? At least the other leagues, like the XFL, had funds to back up their sorry washed up players. They should just take the money they already have and donate it to a charity, that way at least someone wins.

There is still hope for Spring Football!!! Dont give up.  The news media, ABC/ESPN, CBS and Fox are trying to kill off our league with negative reports. They areent impartial, they all have ties to the NFL.   I wouldnt be surprised if the NFL and the news media were involved in trying to cut off financing to the AAFL.  They want to protect their monopoly and stop the dream of a ...(more)

This is so unexpected.  Camps were due to open in a week and the season to start in a month.  Everything seemed to be on target, players due to report, and now I dont know what is going to happen.  This had so much promise.  I hope they can work out the financing glitches and get ready for some Spring Football!

Every one said that indoor football wouldnt catch on. Now almost 20 season later we have players like Kurt warner. IF the NFL wouldnt have monoplized the tv market the USFL would've still been here. Players like Steve Young, Jim Kelly, Hershel Walker and Reggie White shined in the league. CFL is going strong and has produce players like Warren Moon and the rocket. So if the NFL could treat thi ...(more)

I wouldn't say that this league is trying to compete with the NFL. I think of it more like a place for players that didn't get a shot to have one. Who knows, maybe the next stud QB comes from this league.
