Collison, UCLA looking sharp at 21-2
Updated: Feb/08/2008 01:51 AM
Darren Collison had a great second half. Ronald Ramon had a great final second. Here's Friday morning's edition of What You Need To Know Notable game from Thursday: Darren Collison scored no points in the first half but 18 in the second to lead No. 5 UCLA to a 67-59 victory at 17th-ranked Washington State. The loss dropped the Cougars to 17-5 overall, 5-5 in the Pac-10. UCLA is now 21-2 overall, 9-1 in the Pac-10 and off to its best start since 1994-95. If you remember, that's the last time the Bruins won the national title. Notable performance from Thursday: Ronald Ramon made just two of his six 3-point attempts. But the second one was huge because it came from the left corner at the buzzer and gave No. 21 Pittsburgh a 55-54 victory West Virginia that pushed the Panthers to 18-5 overall, 6-4 in the Big East. Ramon has now hit at least one 3-pointer in three straight games. He's the reason West Virginia dropped to 16-7 overall, 5-5 in the Big East. He's the reason the Mountaineers have now lost two of their past four games by one point and in the final seconds. Notable game scheduled for the weekend: First-place in the Big Ten will be at stake Saturday. Somehow neither Indiana nor Michigan State will be involved. Instead it's No. 24 Purdue at No. 8 Wisconsin in a rematch of the game played last month that the Boilermakers won 60-56. Wisconsin is 19-3 overall, 9-1 in the Big Ten. Purdue is 18-5 overall, 9-1 in the Big Ten. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m. ET.
Freshmen in the spotlight: Singler, Beasley, Gordon
Updated: Feb/07/2008 03:17 AM
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Duke is on its way to an ACC title. Michael Beasley is approaching Carmelo territory. Here's Thursday morning's edition of What You Need To Know. Notable game from Wednesday: Duke established itself as the favorite in the ACC with an 89-78 victory at North Carolina. The Blue Devils used a 14-point, 10-rebound effort from Kyle Singler, who was only one of six Duke players to score in double digits. UNC's Quentin Thomas had seven assists and six turnovers while filling in for the injured Ty Lawson. Tyler Hansbrough added 28 points and 18 rebounds. But it wasn't enough to keep the Tar Heels from falling two games behind Duke in the ACC standings. Notable performance from Wednesday: Michael Beasley notched his 18th double-double (35 points and 13 rebounds) while leading Kansas State to a 74-59 victory against Nebraska. The most impressive thing about the feat? Beasley has recorded the 18 double-doubles in only 21 games. He's now only four short of the Division I freshman record for double-doubles set by Syracuse's Carmelo Anthony, and the guess here is that Beasley will tie that record in, well, four games. Notable game scheduled for Thursday: Eric Gordon will experience the type of verbal assault few could imagine when he visits Illinois for the first time since reneging on his commitment and signing with Indiana. The whole saga was one of the wildest recruiting battles college basketball has provided, the type that garnered national headlines and enhanced Kelvin Sampson's reputation as a recruiter with questionable tactics, fair or unfair. Asked about how Gordon would handle the experience, Sampson didn't deny it would register with his freshman. "He's a human being," Sampson said. "I'm sure that is something that will be on his mind. But I think once he takes the court and plays the game, he'll be fine." Tip-off is set for 9 p.m. ET.
Some appetizers before the main course

RALEIGH, N.C. -- N.C. State didn't need Brandon Costner. Florida didn't need Chris Lofton to make all those jumpers. Here's Wednesday morning's edition of What You Need To Know. Notable game from Tuesday: I sat courtside at the RBC Center and watched two bubble teams battle. Good crowd. Good game. But Virginia Tech fell way behind early and could never recover, losing 73-63 at North Carolina State. J.J. Hickson got 21 points for N.C. State, which looked great with Brandon Costner on the bench in street clothes. The sophomore forward missed the game with an injured rib. But the Wolfpack had more than enough to win for the third time in four outings and improve to 15-7 overall, 4-4 in the ACC. Virginia Tech dropped to 14-9 overall, 5-4 in the ACC. Notable performance from Tuesday: Chris Lofton sank six of 11 3-pointers and finished with 26 points and four rebounds to lead No. 7 Tennessee to a 104-82 victory against Florida. Lofton has made 27 of 52 3-point attempts in his past five outings. Yeah, that's better than 50 percent. And the senior guard is suddenly as dangerous as he was most of last season. Notable game scheduled for Wednesday: It seems unlikely that Ty Lawson will play, and that's too bad. But it's still Duke vs. North Carolina at the Dean Dome, which is big regardless the parts and even bigger this season given how the Blue Devils are ranked second and the Tar Heels third. The two teams are a combined 40-1 and both are projected No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament -- at this point. But back to the point, it'll be devastating for UNC if Lawson's sprained ankle keeps him sidelined, because Roy Williams would then be forced to run with what is essentially his third-string point guard considering his backup point guard (Bobby Frasor) is out for the season with a knee injury. Either way, tip-off is set for 9 p.m. ET.
He'll never forget his first

Patrick Mills got everything he expected. Edgar Sosa nearly hit every shot he launched. Here's Tuesday morning's edition of What You Need To Know. Notable game from Monday: Saint Mary's freshman Patrick Mills summed it up best, telling reporters afterward that his first game against Gonzaga was "everything I expected." Yeah, it was everything I expected, too ... even if it made for a late night in my time zone. Mills missed all six 3-pointers he took and still finished with 23 points in Saint Mary's' 89-85 overtime victory that pushed the Gaels into a first-place tie with Gonzaga. By all standards, it was a great game. And the rematch is March 1. Notable performance from Monday: Edgar Sosa was nothing if not efficient -- hitting 5-of-7 shots (including 3-of-4 3-point attempts) and 5-of-5 free throws to finish with 18 points in Louisville's 71-57 win at 16th-ranked Marquette. It was the ninth time this season that Sosa has scored in double-figures. Louisville is 8-1 in those games with the only loss coming to Purdue. Notable game scheduled for Tuesday: Drake's perfect record in the Missouri Valley Conference is at stake in what should be the Bulldogs' toughest contest to date. They are at Illinois State, which is the second-best team in the MVC. The Bulldogs (20-1 overall, 11-0 in the MVC) beat the Redbirds (16-6 overall, 8-3 in the MVC) a little more than two weeks ago at Drake. And if Keno Davis' team wins this rematch it will pretty much secure its first league title in 37 years given how the Bulldogs would have a four-game lead (plus the tie-breaker) with just six league games remaining. Tip-off is set for 8:05 p.m. ET.
Poll Attacks: I made a mistake -- there, I said it
Updated: Feb/04/2008 06:57 PM
I'm tempted to write about how it's nuts that Saint Mary's is ranked and Gonzaga isn't. But the moment I do that Saint Mary's will beat the Zags by 15 late Monday night. So I'm staying away from that and going another direction. Here are this week's Poll Attacks. AP poll: I made a mistake last week when I didn't put Virginia Tech on the bubble. There, I said it. I messed up because the Hokies have been better than I expected this season, overcoming all those personnel losses to enter Tuesday night's game at North Carolina State (which I'm attending) with a 5-3 ACC record. Not bad for the team I predicted to finish 11th in the ACC. But Virginia Tech still should not be No. 21 on the ballot of Steve Rivera of the Tucson Citizen, not with a body of work that looks like this: • 14-8 overall record. • Best wins against Boston College (on the road) and Maryland (at home). • 0-3 record against the Top 50. • 1-5 record against the Top 80. • Three losses outside the Top 100 (to Richmond, Penn State and Old Dominion). • Double-digit losses to three of the top six teams it has played (Duke, Gonzaga and Georgia Tech). Does that sound like a Top 25 team to you? Coaches poll: I like Villanova -- everything from the coaching staff to the players to the history (1985 national champions, case you didn't know). But it's hard to grasp how any coach could have the Wildcats on their ballot now that they are 13-7 and the losers of four straight outings (to Rutgers, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and Syracuse). I mean, Villanova isn't even a projected NCAA Tournament team at this moment, primarily because it is 2-4 against the Top 50 and 4-5 against the Top 100 at CollegeRPI.com. There are two losses to teams outside the Top 120 and five wins against teams outside the Top 200, and if the Wildcats don't upset Saint Joseph's on Monday night (they are a 4.5-point underdog) then that'll be five consecutive defeats. The good news? Villanova has no seniors. This roster should return intact. But for now things are very much a work in progress and Top 25 votes shouldn't be attached.
Heels don't miss Lawson vs. FSU ... what about Duke?
Updated: Feb/04/2008 02:56 AM
Ty Lawson is injured. Eric Gordon doesn't seem injured anymore. Here's Monday morning's edition of What You Need To Know. (Also, please disregard the Super Bowl prediction below. I'm clearly a dumb man.) Notable game from Sunday: North Carolina played almost the entire game without Ty Lawson and still managed an 84-73 overtime win at Florida State. Tyler Hansbrough finished with 22 points and 21 rebounds for the Tar Heels, who will now head into Wednesday's showdown with Duke on a three-game winning streak. As for whether Lawson will be available, it's still too early to tell. The point guard's sprained ankle is expected to be further evaluated Monday afternoon. Notable performance from Sunday: Eric Gordon didn't seem nearly as bothered by a bad wrist this time around. The Indiana freshman finished with 29 points in a 73-65 win over Northwestern that snapped a two-game losing streak and put to rest any theories about whether Gordon's injury would continue to bother him the way it seemed to bother him last week at Wisconsin. Gordon made 8-of-14 shots -- including 6-of-10 3-point attempts -- against Northwestern. He's scored at least 12 points in 12 consecutive outings. Notable game scheduled for Monday: The two best teams in the West Coast Conference are finally getting together. Gonzaga is 17-5 overall, 6-0 in the WCC. Saint Mary's is 18-3 overall, 5-1 in the WCC. They tip-off at 11 p.m. ET, and the Gaels must win this home game or risk falling too far behind in the standings to take the league title considering it's unlikely Gonzaga will lose to any other WCC member.
A little basketball, and a Super prediction

The new Top 25 (and one) is in. I did not drop Kansas despite a loss. I'll explain why in the Poll Attacks on Monday. But before I head to a Super Bowl party -- and by party, I mean a get together with a bunch of kids where I basically just focus on trying to keep my 4-year-old son from flushing random objects down our friend's toilet -- I figured I'd leave you with a prediction based on nothing more than common sense, which is rare to find these days given how we tend to overanalyze things when there are two weeks to look at one game. With all that time, people start writing about pass rushes and ball control, and the basics get lost. But all you have to do is return to the basics to figure out how this movie will end. So without further ado, here are the basics ... The best team in history (with arguably the best quarterback, receiver and coach in history) is playing a wild-card team whose coach and quarterback were widely viewed as a bad draft pick and terrible hire just four months ago. Plus, the best team in history apparently cheats. And if Barry Bonds has taught us anything (besides the definition of flaxseed oil) it's that contrary to what we learned in kindergarten cheaters do indeed win. In fact, cheaters have about the highest success rate of anybody in sports, best I can tell. So call your local bookmaker and lay the points because the Patriots will win Super Bowl XLII easily. Final score: 41-17.
Wazzu can't afford to let this happen

Washington State lost at home. Luke Harangody didn't. Here's Friday morning's edition of What You Need To Know. Notable game from Thursday: It's one thing to lose at UCLA and at Arizona. No shame there, particularly with Kevin Love and Jerryd Bayless involved. But if the goal is to win a Pac-10 title you can't afford to take bad losses at home in this league, which is to say you can't afford to let California beat you the way Washington State let California beat it in Pullman. The final score was 69-64, and the main problem for the ninth-ranked Cougars was they allowed Ryan Anderson to get 27 points and nine rebounds. Meantime, Derrick Low finished with just five points. He missed 9-of-11 shots and Tony Bennett's team has now dropped two of its past three outings. Notable performance from Thursday: Luke Harangody continued his quest for All-America honors, finishing with a career-high 31 points and 14 rebounds in Notre Dame's 81-74 overtime victory against Providence that extended the Irish's homecourt winning streak to 32 games. A 6-foot-8 sophomore, Harangody made 11-of-22 shots and 9-of-10 free throws. He's now scored at least 25 points in four of Notre Dame's past five games. Notable game scheduled for the weekend: There are a slew of solid games on tap, most notably Arizona at UCLA. But I'll use this space to focus on the game I'm attending, which is No. 7 Tennessee at Mississippi State. The Vols (18-2) are leading the SEC's Eastern Division. The Bulldogs (14-6) are leading the SEC's Western Division. Both teams have 5-1 conference records. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET, and the game will feature one of the nation's best playmakers (MSU's Jamont Gordon), one of the nation's best shooters (UT's Chris Lofton) and one of the nation's best shotblockers (MSU's Jarvis Vanardo).
