Commodores report: Notes, quotes
--DE Broderick Stewart could have started for a lot of defenses last year but had to be content with a backup role. With Curtis Gatewood having graduated, Stewart will now pressure quarterbacks regularly. He had two tackles for loss, including a sack, in the Black and Gold Scrimmage. --CB D.J. Moore saw limited action in the Black and Gold Scrimmage due to an injury, but there was no need to push him. He showed what he could do last year, earning All-SEC honors as a sophomore and displaying his big-play ability on special teams and a sprinkling of offensive snaps. SPRING MOVERS QB Jared Funk -- A lot can happen between now and preseason camp, but Funk couldn't have hurt his cause by producing two scoring drives on a day when last year's starters struggled. Funk threw for a score and ended the scrimmage with a 13-yard touchdown run. LB Chris Johnson -- Someone has to replace the likes of All-SEC pick Jonathan Goff and Marcus Buggs. Why not Johnson, who led all tacklers in the Black and Gold Scrimmage with five? He filled in for Goff the last two years and appears to have the frame (6-1, 230 pounds) which can hold up in the SEC. TB Jared Hawkins -- In part-time play the last two years, Hawkins has averaged 5.5 yards in 103 carries. While Jeff Jennings will probably be the starter in 2008, Hawkins is a very capable No. 2. He ran for a team-high 44 yards in the Black and Gold Scrimmage. QUOTE TO NOTE Copyright (C) 2008 The Sports Xchange. All Rights Reserved. | ||||||||||||
