--The current crop of wide receivers is being rated as very likely the best Virginia has had in coach Al Groh's eight seasons. Junior Kevin Ogletree, who missed 2007 because of a knee injury, is rated an All-ACC candidate. He had 52 catches for 582 yards in 2006. Senior Maurice Covington (21 catches in nine games in 2007) and sophomore Staton Jobe (17 catches) are returning starters. Sophomore Dontrelle Inman and redshirt freshmen Kris Burd and Jared Green are promising newcomers, and senior Cary Koch adds depth.

--The Cavaliers came out of the spring with no sure No. 1 quarterback, though sophomore Peter Lalich, who was 35-for-61 passing for 321 yards and two touchdowns against one interception in 2007, is the likely heir apparent. Senior Scott Deke and sophomore Mike Verica also are candidates. All three played an equal number of series in the final spring scrimmage, but the order they played was determined by lot with Deke (17 of 23, 160 yards) starting followed by Verica (17 of 25, 110) and Lalich (six of 18, 72). Lalich had three interceptions.

SPRING MOVERS

DE Matt Conrath -- His one-handed interception during the spring game reminded observers of the kind of play first-round draft pick Chris Long has made over the last few seasons. Conrath is a 6-7, 269-pound redshirt freshman who usually reserved coach Al Groh calls "very athletic."

TE John Phillips -- The senior was rated one of the most improved players in the spring in addition to being named one of four co-captains. He had 17 catches last year in registering eight starts.

C Jack Shields -- After arriving on campus as a tight end, Shields, a sophomore, backed up starter Jordan Lipsey at center in 2007 and looks to be the starter when the Cavaliers open Aug. 30 against Southern California.

LB Denzell Burrell -- Burrell, a junior who played mostly on special teams his first two seasons, looks to step into the starting position vacated by Jermaine Dias. He was picked as the most improved player on defense in the spring.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"What I am positive about is that in practice No. 15, with what we could have gotten done at this point, we are pretty close to that." -- Coach Al Groh, summing up the progress of the spring.

Hi Cavaliers fans. I was hoping some Virginia fans could tell me something about Branden Albert. He is by far the best guard in the draft. The Chiefs took him in the first round and I have read many places that the Chiefs are putting him at Left Tackle, even Herm Edwards said this. My question is, who did the Cavaliers have playing Left Tackle last season? "Willie Roaf's son?". Ho ...(more)

(POLL) I'm smelling the perfect storm coming.  Good players leave, some players return, and the coach is not excited about ANY of our quarterbacks.  Oh, and we have USC to open the season.  So what will our record be?  How bad will the damage be?  Will 3-9 get Groh fired?  When will we get a coach the can recruit, develop AND actually coach during games!

With both Chris Long  and Branden Albert being drafted in the 1st round and Tom Santi in the 6th... I'm pretty happy. Although, I'm going to miss all three of them next season!

The recruiting class is not as rich as usual,  and issues are coming out of the woodwork.   These are rough times for BIG AL AND THE BOYS.  What i will say is that this is usually when Groh does his best coaching.  When nobody expects the Cavs to do anything.  So dont be surprised if Virginia shows up to play the trojans very tough.  Oh and by the way,  who ...(more)

We have a poor recruiting class this year.  How does Duke have a better football recruiting class than we do?  Al Groh has to do a better job of recruiting.

Yea, not really. You rank 10 out of the 12 ACC teams. Only better than  Duke and Wake Forest. Keep up the good work.

Has anyone else been watching his combine performance.  I love the "he's not an overacheiver he's freakishly athletic".  We all knew he was awesome, but a 272 lb guy running a 4.7 40??

Thank you Mr. Long for letting us ride your shoulders this season.

I just set up a new college baseball forum a couple of days ago and I'm trying to get the word spread out. Should be fun once the season gets going.

Sewell flunked out of Virginia, so he isn't on the team until at least the 2009 season.  I can't wait for all of the Tech fans coming on here making fun of us.   Others are Chris Cook, linebacker Darnell Carter and wide receiver Chris Dalton.

Also D coordinator Mike London is going to be Richmond's head coach.
