SPRING OBJECTIVES
Virginia has a lot of work to do in the spring after losing several key performers on both sides of the ball. Some, like DE Chris Long, were seniors in 2007, but in addition, LG Branden Albert opted for the NFL draft and five others, among them QB Jameel Sewell, CB Chris Cook and DE Jeffrey Fitzgerald, were academic casualties. Only two starters return to the offensive line. New defensive coordinator Bob Pruett, the former Marshall head coach, must replace six lost starters on defense, including all three front men in the 3-4 scheme.

BUILDING BLOCKS
QB Peter Lalich saw action in eight games as a freshman in 2008 and will be the starter. He completed 57 percent of his passes for 321 yards and a touchdown. TBs Mikell Simpson and Cedric Peerman, the latter returning from a foot injury, are a good, solid running back tandem. With the return of Kevin Ogletree from a knee injury that cost him all of 2007, the Cavaliers have two dependable receivers with him and Maurice Covington. Linebacker looks especially solid on defense with the return of Jon Copper, Clint Sintim and Antonio Appleby, all returning senior starters.

SCHEDULE SITUATION
The Cavaliers will get a good idea of how they stack up after opening the season at home against national title contender Southern California on Aug. 30. The Trojans are one of eight bowl teams from last season on this years schedule. The Cavs get Richmond at home the following week and then go to Connecticut on Sept. 13. Their first conference game is at Duke Sept. 27.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"I don't get frustrated. Frustration doesn't accomplish anything. We've got a formula in place for what we believe and how we operate, which we are always self-checking and quality controlling, and with that in mind, we're going about our business on a daily basis." -- Coach Al Groh, on dealing with the unexpected personnel losses during the offseason.

(POLL) I'm smelling the perfect storm coming.  Good players leave, some players return, and the coach is not excited about ANY of our quarterbacks.  Oh, and we have USC to open the season.  So what will our record be?  How bad will the damage be?  Will 3-9 get Groh fired?  When will we get a coach the can recruit, develop AND actually coach during games!

With both Chris Long  and Branden Albert being drafted in the 1st round and Tom Santi in the 6th... I'm pretty happy. Although, I'm going to miss all three of them next season!

The recruiting class is not as rich as usual,  and issues are coming out of the woodwork.   These are rough times for BIG AL AND THE BOYS.  What i will say is that this is usually when Groh does his best coaching.  When nobody expects the Cavs to do anything.  So dont be surprised if Virginia shows up to play the trojans very tough.  Oh and by the way,  who ...(more)

We have a poor recruiting class this year.  How does Duke have a better football recruiting class than we do?  Al Groh has to do a better job of recruiting.

Yea, not really. You rank 10 out of the 12 ACC teams. Only better than  Duke and Wake Forest. Keep up the good work.

Has anyone else been watching his combine performance.  I love the "he's not an overacheiver he's freakishly athletic".  We all knew he was awesome, but a 272 lb guy running a 4.7 40??

Thank you Mr. Long for letting us ride your shoulders this season.

I just set up a new college baseball forum a couple of days ago and I'm trying to get the word spread out. Should be fun once the season gets going.

Sewell flunked out of Virginia, so he isn't on the team until at least the 2009 season.  I can't wait for all of the Tech fans coming on here making fun of us.   Others are Chris Cook, linebacker Darnell Carter and wide receiver Chris Dalton.

Also D coordinator Mike London is going to be Richmond's head coach.
