Virginia was the surprise team in the ACC last season when the Cavaliers went into the season finale against Virginia Tech needing a victory to win the Coastal Division and play in the conference championship game.

But the Cavaliers lost that game 33-21, and nothing much has gone right with them since.

They blew a late lead and lost to Texas Tech in the Gator Bowl, lost a key offensive lineman when guard Branden Albert declared for the NFL draft, and then saw a half-a-dozen players declared ineligible for academic or, in one case, legal troubles.

And the spring failed to produce a clear-cut answer at quarterback, where three candidates are vying for the job held the last two years by Jameel Sewell, one of the players who ran into academic woes.

The Cavaliers also have lost their top two pass rushers (Chris Long and Jeffrey Fitzgerald), three starting offensive linemen, and two starters in the secondary -- not to mention both kickers.

Considering the fine line the Cavaliers walked in 2007, winning six games by five or fewer points with five of those one- or two-pointers, that's not exactly a ringing endorsement for the 2008 season, which begins with a visit from national contender Southern California.

"We have a very challenging road in front us," coach Al Groh told the Richmond Times-Dispatch in what may be the understatement of the preseason.

(POLL) I'm smelling the perfect storm coming.  Good players leave, some players return, and the coach is not excited about ANY of our quarterbacks.  Oh, and we have USC to open the season.  So what will our record be?  How bad will the damage be?  Will 3-9 get Groh fired?  When will we get a coach the can recruit, develop AND actually coach during games!

With both Chris Long  and Branden Albert being drafted in the 1st round and Tom Santi in the 6th... I'm pretty happy. Although, I'm going to miss all three of them next season!

The recruiting class is not as rich as usual,  and issues are coming out of the woodwork.   These are rough times for BIG AL AND THE BOYS.  What i will say is that this is usually when Groh does his best coaching.  When nobody expects the Cavs to do anything.  So dont be surprised if Virginia shows up to play the trojans very tough.  Oh and by the way,  who ...(more)

We have a poor recruiting class this year.  How does Duke have a better football recruiting class than we do?  Al Groh has to do a better job of recruiting.

Yea, not really. You rank 10 out of the 12 ACC teams. Only better than  Duke and Wake Forest. Keep up the good work.

Has anyone else been watching his combine performance.  I love the "he's not an overacheiver he's freakishly athletic".  We all knew he was awesome, but a 272 lb guy running a 4.7 40??

Thank you Mr. Long for letting us ride your shoulders this season.

I just set up a new college baseball forum a couple of days ago and I'm trying to get the word spread out. Should be fun once the season gets going.

Sewell flunked out of Virginia, so he isn't on the team until at least the 2009 season.  I can't wait for all of the Tech fans coming on here making fun of us.   Others are Chris Cook, linebacker Darnell Carter and wide receiver Chris Dalton.

Also D coordinator Mike London is going to be Richmond's head coach.
