The high the Bruins started to feel with new coach Rick Neuheisel quickly turned into a depressing low when quarterbacks Ben Olson and Patrick Cowan were carted off the field on the same day.

UCLA probably will head into fall workouts with JC transfer Kevin Craft, highly regarded recruit Nick Crissman and possibly Kevin Prince in contention for the starting quarterback job in the season opener against Tennessee.

This is not exactly what offensive coordinator Norm Chow thought was going to be the scenario when he was hired.

"I have full confidence in Norm Chow. I have full confidence in the kids to give everything they've got," Neuheisel said. "We're going to find a way to play that position well."

Cowan is out for the season after suffering cartilage and ligament damage to his left knee. He will have to petition for a sixth year of eligibility. Olson is out for almost two months with a broken bone in his right foot.

The injuries happened one day before the final scrimmage of the spring.

Olson is expected to return by August, but injuries have clouded his playing time since day one, leaving Craft as a possible starter.

Craft responded by completing 11 of 24 passes in the spring scrimmage finale for 95 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

"He's just going too fast. He almost is hyperventilating, he's trying so hard," Neuheisel said.

If the quarterback situation wasn't bad enough, there has been a constant snapping exchange problem.

Fall camp will have more meaning, that's for sure.

Both Pat Cowan and Ben Olson won't be participating on the final Spring scrimmage at Rose Bowl. Pat Cowan could be out of the entire season when MRI revealed that he has damage ACL on his left knee. The same left knee he had surgery last February. Wanting to be a starter, I think Pat Cowan came back too soon after the surgery which lead to this injury.

Meanwhile, Ben Olson suff

I'm hearing nothing out here and was wondering if the local press is covering any details other than the QB battle.  Any updates would be greatly appreciated.

Hey everyone.  I just got back from the Spring Game - it was pretty cool to see the guys come out of the tunnel to the cheers of 15,000 Bruin fans.

There are a lot of factors that could have contributed to my observations, but here they are nevertheless.

1.  I think we are all going to really like Courtney Viney.  The game started with some speci

The Las Vegas Bookmakers have posted UCLA's over/under at at 5 1/2 wins this season.  The Bruins have to play 6 pre season top 25 teams this season including sc, ASU, Tennessee, BYU, Fresno st. and Oregon.  Seven home games with road games at Provo, Eugene, Berkeley, Seattle and Tempe.   I have to question the Senior leadership on this team with their decision to ...(more)

Fans' favorite, Pat Cowan, emerged as #1 QB so far this Spring practice. Surprisingly, Norm Chow observed him as having a stronger arm than Ben Olson. He's more mobile than Olson and hopefully Norm Chow can develop him further before Fall. I supposed having to coach Vince Young the last 2 years, Norm Chow may have a little different perspective or approach on his new simplify offense. In t ...(more)

Community,

We have a somewhat-new feature on Vcast/AT&T. Each week I ask you to explain why you love or hate a program. I'll usually do this when your team is playing a rival. And it just so happens UCLA is playing USC. So Bruins fans here's a small chance to take some nice shots at USC and tell the world what's so great about L.A.'s real college football team.

I know it is basketball season, but I sometimes take pause to look ahead to 2008.  I am excited about the offense, as I think we have talent and depth at all of the skill positions.  Lanis and Kia give us great anchors at the tackles, but I am curious to see how we rebuild the interior of the O-Line.  Keane, Dean, Sheller, Bennett, young Tevaga - there is some potential there.

I just set up a new college baseball forum a couple of days ago and I'm trying to get the word spread out. Should be fun once the season gets going.
