Rockets report: Inside slant
After consecutive 5-7 seasons, the Rockets focused on returning to glory in the spring. Coach Tom Amstutz used the 15 practices to shore up the defense by adding more depth to the defensive line looking for playmakers. The good news for the Rockets is the return of defensive ends Sean Williamson and Doug Westbrook along with safety Tyrrell Herbert. All three defensive players received a medical redshirt last year. The Rockets need all three players to be healthy and contributing next fall. The Rockets finished with just nine sacks last year. The Rockets have a quartet of solid cornerbacks with the return of Desmond Marrow joining Walter Atkins, Myshan Pettis and Greg Harris. For the first time since Bruce Gradkowski left for the NFL, the Rockets didn't have to worry about finding a starting quarterback. Aaron Opelt had a solid sophomore season and returns with plenty of confidence after several big games last fall. The Rockets lost their main offensive star from last year, tailback Jalen Parmele, but return a strong group of experienced and talented players. DaJuane Collins is expected to handle the majority of the carries after backup Gordon Warner took snaps at slot receiver in the spring. Copyright (C) 2008 The Sports Xchange. All Rights Reserved.
