San Jose State's leading rusher in its spring game was quarterback Sean Flynn with 21 yards -- and he's probably No. 3 on the QB depth chart.

Both the vacant running back and quarterback positions remained largely unsettled as spring practice concluded for the Spartans on April 12. Those are two big question marks as San Jose State attempts to bounce back from last season's disappointing 5-7 finish and return to the bowl scene in 2008.

Their running game ranked 112th nationally in 2007 at 83.8 yards per game and their nine rushing touchdowns were the fewest in the WAC. With Yonus Davis ineligible, Pat Perry rehabbing a knee injury and recruit Brandon Rutley not on campus, the Spartans were stuck in neutral this spring.

"The picture in the fall, hopefully, will look a lot different than it is now," head coach Dick Tomey said. "I think we have a chance to have a good situation, but we're counting on the come on several guys. If none of that works out, with the guys we have now, we'll still be functional."

"Functional" won't take much pressure off the new signal-caller as the Spartans replace Adam Tafralis, the school's career leader in total offense and passing yards. Junior Myles Eden, who attempted just 15 passes in 2007, has the edge heading into August two-a-days over heralded Cal transfer Kyle Reed, Flynn and Jordan La Secla. Reed missed valuable time with a broken bone in his left foot.

"I would say Myles is ahead. He's doing what we ask him to do," Tomey said. "What we have to do is make some tough decisions in the fall about who gets the reps. Certainly Kyle will get his opportunity, because he deserves that and his injury was unfortunate."

Hey San Jose fans! I just wanted to say, I read how players of your team visited Ian Johnson in the hospital last year.

The Spartans have my vote for the classiest team in college football!
You guys are COOL!
