SPRING OBJECTIVES
Make sure starters settle in on defense, with new faces being called upon to take over for graduation losses. There are junior-college players in the mix and some of the people who will help won't be there for spring. Mike Riley also has to solidify the running-back position with Yvenson Bernard gone and is looking for a kicker and punter after the loss of Alexis Serna.

BUILDING BLOCKS
Wide receiver/punt returner Sammie Stroughter was granted another year with a medical redshirt and is the star of the offense, which also gets guard Jeremy Perry back from injury, even though Perry was missing the spring with knee surgery. Mike Riley still doesn't know if Sean Canfield or Lyle Moevao will settle in as the starting quarterback. Safety Al Afalava and defensive end Victor Butler are keys on defense, with Afalava suspended for the opening game for an off-the-field incident.

SCHEDULE SITUATION
Not an easy one. The Beavers start the season at Stanford and Penn State and play eight bowl teams in 2008. They do have the Civil War with Oregon at home. "We have been slow starters the last couple of seasons, we can't afford that this year," said OSU coach Mike Riley.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"We certainly lost a lot of very good football players who were probably the most or one of the most successful classes in Oregon State history. But, at the same time, our entire coaching staff is excited about what lies ahead. We have watched a young group gain experience playing behind veterans, now it's their turn to be the veterans." -- Oregon State coach Mike Riley before the start of spring camp.

I was reading this article on rivals.  Milestone performances during the BCS era.  They show how many 1,000 yard rushers, how many 3,000 yard passers and how many 1,000 yard receivers.  Hawaii had the most with 0 / 9 / 13.  Oregon state and Texas Tech both tied with 18.  Texas Tech 1 / 8 / 9.  Oregon State was very well balanced with 8 / 5 / 5.

Penn State's plethora of solid WRs is no secret.  The talent and power of OS's DBs however, might just be.

Assuming Al Afalava is able to play, the Beaver's secondary will be top notch in '08.  The Beavers D has won games in the trenches for the past few seasons, but a big play one way or the other coming from the PSU pass game may be the deciding f ...(more)

The Beavers have traveled to Hawaii 7 times, winning 4 of the games.  Corvallis will welcome the Warriors (formerly Rainbows) for the first time.  I was at Aloha stadium in 2006 when the Beavers won 35-32.  I will be in Corvallis on September 13th for the 2008 of Beavers and Warriors.

UH lost its top 4 receivers and of course, Colt Brennan.  Not to mention, June ...(more)

What is your run defense like?  Because, with our new QB, we're gonna option alot and run with our star RB Evan Royster.

Well today is the spring game. Hopefully some of you guys get to check it out. Its not too easy to get ahold of down here in Texas so Im counting on you guys up there!

Biggest Questions for me about the spring game:

How do the QB's look? How is Katz coming along? Does he look like a fish out of water or a possible candidate to start?

How do the RB' s look? ...(more)

GoBEAVS13 brought this up in the DRAFT thread.

I cannot believe no one has taken a flyer on Doggs.  We all know what a stud he was at OS.  His speed, instincs, ball-skills and toughness should at least get him a shot in someone's mini-camp.

I will be very disappointed if he doesn't catch on somewhere.

Okay beaver fans how do you rate our chances against Penn State.  Penn State went 9-4 like we did but they are not losing a lot of Sr's this year.  The are losing their starting quarterback, their #1,#3, & #5 rushers, and they are losing their top linebacker.  Their #2 rusher was a freshman.  Their top LB was1st in tackles and 2nd in sacks at Penn State last year.  The ...(more)
