--Running back looks to be a position of strength for Miami. Both Javarris James, who ran with more authority in the spring, and Graig Cooper (who showed a higher gear) return after combining to rush for 1,264 yards in 2007. Pushing them are Shawnbrey McNeal, who had a 39-yard touchdown run against Georgia Tech as a freshman last season, senior Derron Thomas and redshirt freshman Lee Chambers.

--Senior LB Glenn Cook, who received a sixth year of eligibility after missing all of 2007 because of a foot injury, had a solid spring, registering four stops (one for a loss) in the spring game. With the Hurricanes so young, Cook could be a valuable asset in the leadership department if he can stay healthy. He has 14 career starts, including 11 in 2006.

SPRING MOVERS

QB Robert Marve -- Though coach Randy Shannon declined to name a No. 1 at the position, Marve, a redshirt freshman, looked to have the edge over true freshmen Jacory Harris (who could stand a few extra pounds on his 6-4 frame) and Cannon Smith. In addition to his passing ability, Marve is quick enough to be a threat as a runner.

DE Allen Bailey -- After playing on special teams in all 12 games as a freshman last season, Bailey had an impressive spring and looks to nail down the starting spot opposite returning starter Eric Moncur.

LB Sean Spence -- A true freshman who enrolled early to take part in spring drills, Spence is only 6-0, 186, but his quickness and playmaking ability should put him high in the rotation for next fall.

RG Joel Figueroa -- The sophomore who played in seven games as a redshirt freshman last season earned a starting spot with his aggressive play in the spring.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"They did a great job. We had maybe two or three picks that were bouncing off defensive linemen and tips and things like that, but I think for the most part their throwing ability, accuracy, getting to the right guys to make plays to move the sticks were things we needed." -- Coach Randy Shannon, assessing the play of the quarterbacks in the final spring scrimmage.
