The consensus at Miami is that the Hurricanes showed promise of a great future with their performance in the spring, but whether that great future will be in 2008 is doubtful.
That's because so many newcomers, including true freshmen, look to have to play key roles next fall, and there very likely will be some growing pains.
Miami had nine signees take part in the spring drills after enrolling early.
Some, like wide receiver Aldarius Johnson, linebacker Sean Spence, linebacker Arthur Brown, defensive tackle Marcus Forston and fullback John Calhoun, look to be immediate contributors, and that list could grow in the fall.
When you throw in redshirt freshmen like quarterback Robert Marve, wide receiver Jermaine McKenzie and tailback Lee Chambers, plus sophomores like defensive end Allen Bailey, offensive linemen Orlando Franklin and Joe Figueroa, receiver Leonard Hankerson and defensive tackle Josh Holmes, that's a pretty big youth movement -- especially with only eight players with at least seven starts returning.
For now, probably the most important thing the young players have given the program is competition across the board.
"The competition is great," says Marve, who looks to have the edge at quarterback over true freshmen Jacory Harris, Cannon Smith and Taylor Cook when fall camp opens. "We have competition at every level -- receiver, DBs, DL, all across the board. Everyone on the team is good."

There will be another James in the University of Miami backfield soon.
On Saturday, Mike James, no relation to former UM star Edgerrin James or current junior Javarris James, became the latest running back to commit to the Hurricanes' 2009 signing class. He had made an unofficial visit to the school with his parents Friday after a three-hour drive from Polk County.
Looking at the schedule 8 or 9 is what I believe we will get. We could get more if Marve is money and the freshman can gel.I believe it can't get worse then last year, 6 loses its the absoulute worse case scenario this year. Here is the schedule w=win l=lose *= it can go both ways
FSU is way ahead of UM in recruiting for the future 2009. FSU is back on track with Jimbo Fisher and Chuck Amato, Lawrence Dawsey, Rick Trickett, Dexter Carter and of course our beloved B. Bowden....I hope you all get better so we can return to the days where the National Championship goes through Miami or Tally.......Good luck boys and girls.
Ok lets forget about the past will that make you happy? You start the season at home against Hawaii which is not a real test this year. They traded in Colt Brennan, the three headed reciever threat and June Jones for Tyler Graunke
And Greg Mcmackin you should win this one 56-14 easily. The blowout with most likely the #1 ranking will produce an overconfident team heading into week two against a
