The Louisville spring game didn't look too much like a game.

The event was held without a game clock and included only 12 series between the offense and defense, with the latter unit lining up in nickel formation even during some running situations.

That's because head coach Steve Kragthorpe didn't have enough depth to field two full squads for a normal scrimmage. Graduation and injuries hit the Cards hard, especially at many key defensive positions.

This spring the focus was building depth while working in several new players. Both sides of the ball also had to learn new systems, with Jeff Brohm taking over as offensive coordinator and Ron English coming from Michigan to lead the defensive unit.

Despite the inexperience, Kragthorpe said he likes the general direction the team is heading after last year's disastrous 6-6 campaign in his first year at the school.

"The pieces are there, we've just got to execute a little better," he said. "We're a long ways away on both sides of the ball but I think we've made a significant amount of progress."

The Cardinals are at least set at quarterback, with senior Hunter Cantwell looking poised for a big year, and the running game should be a lot stronger and more explosive with the emergence of Bilal Powell and Victor Anderson. The offensive line is anchored by senior all-American candidates Eric Wood at center and George Bussey at left tackle. The defensive line is solid, especially on the interior.

But huge questions remain at linebacker and in the secondary, while the team needs to find some reliable receivers out of a large pack of contenders for the job. Kragthorpe brought in eight junior college players in December for a quick fix, but none distinguished himself during the spring.

With eight home games on the schedule, Louisville should put itself in position to return to a bowl game this season. How much higher the Cardinals can fly depends on the answers to their pressing personnel questions.

Long it has been since last we spoke. How are things in the land of many recent tragedies, some slightly more tragic (Eight Belles) than others (Caracter leaving, oh no)?

Anybody pumped for football season? I'm ready to see what the so called "improved" (would be a stretch of the imagination) UK defense can do against the still stellar UofL offense. More then that, I am r ...(more)

Mike Privott a 3 star LB ranked #25. He is 6'0 215 lbs from Norfolk, VA. It's a great pick up, we need LB's as bad as oxygen.

Possible point guard of the future? Peyton Siva, a top 20 national player in the class of 2009 has committed to the Cards. He chose the Cards over Kansas, Arizona, and Washington. He played on the same AAU team as T-will so that may have given us a little edge. Class of 2009 is shaping up nicely with Siva (#20 in rankings), Buckles (#42) and underrated but rising Mike Marra (#149). If we can ke ...(more)

(POLL) So what is everyone's opinion on recruits for next year's class??? Yes, I know that this is a bit early for us Cards fans. But the offseason is killing me and there's gotta be something to talk about. So again how do you all feel about our recruiting efforts so far?

Me, I'm in the "it's alright" category. I mean it's good that we're getting

Do you all keep getting a pop-up that says "get in the game, put your opinion in the spotlight"? It keeps sliding onto my screen from the left and no matter how many times I close it it comes right back when I load a new screen. I have pop-up blocker on but this one is immune to combat.

Maybe it's just me, but if you have any tips to share, please do so. You can only ...(more)

(POLL) Alright, so I'll just let out what we've been holding in as card fans waiting for the football season.  We have a tremendously talented incoming D-Coordinator in Ron English coming from what some'll consider a good defensive team (24th and 10th best total defense with him as DC).  With all the new coordinators coming in, do you all think they can shape this defense up?

BB is a Cheesehead, and Harry Douglas will be Matt Ryan's target.  Kinda ironic huh? I think BB will definetly hold the reign down for Favre. I would like to see Brett back for one more year and to teach BB the ropes. GB has a good line (former Card Jason Spitz is on it). I am a life long Niner fan and GB is a big rival. But I would love to see him have a great career in the cheese cou ...(more)
