Hawkeyes report: Notes, quotes
--Senior defensive tackles Mitch King (6-3, 264) and Matt Kroul (6-3, 277) are both on the Outland Trophy watch list for 2008. King was named first-team All-Big Ten by the coaches last season and Kroul was an honorable mention selection. Kroul has started 37 consecutive games and King has started 32 times in his career. --WR Andy Brodell looked like his old self in the last spring scrimmage, hauling in five catches for 51 yards. Head coach Kirk Ferentz said it took the 6-3, 200-pound senior time to get up to speed after missing the final eight games last season with a torn hamstring. "I'm not saying he didn't practice well, but he didn't look like the guy that we saw at the end of 2006," Ferentz told the Iowa City Press-Citizen. SPRING MOVERS RB Paki O'Meara -- The sophomore walk-on vaulted to the top of the depth chart this spring, but will have to hold off Juco transfer Nate Guillory, returnee Shonn Greene and freshmen Jeff Brinson and Jewel Hampton. "All those guys have different tools," said QB Jake Christensen. "Paki is more of a power guy. He's a good leader, a real strong player who is good at pass protection and catching the ball out of the backfield." WR Trey Stross -- The 6-3, 195-pound junior was the offensive star of the spring game with two long touchdown receptions. "Nice to see him come up with some big plays, and he's kind of done that throughout his career," Ferentz said. "It would be a wonderful time for him to mature and evolve into a guy that we can count on." SS Tyler Sash -- The redshirt freshman is challenging incumbent Harold Dalton and sophomore Lance Tillison for the starting position. He punctuated a strong offseason with a pair of rib-rattling hits during the final spring scrimmage. QUOTE TO NOTE Copyright (C) 2008 The Sports Xchange. All Rights Reserved.
