2008 OUTLOOK: New coach. New attitude. New results? Art Briles thinks his first Baylor team has the talent to make some noise in 2008, thus turning things around in Waco. But this is a team that has to first stop being a Big 12 doormat before it can think about serious winning.

SCOUTING THE OFFENSE
There is a healthy competition at quarterback, but like coach Art Briles says, "Offensive line is the key. Right now we've got three players that we believe in a whole lot and we've got to find two other guys to jump in there with them. We get five offensive linemen that can play and we will be a good football team." Jay Finley was running like a lead runner in the spring and the Bears have athletes on this side of the ball.

SCOUTING THE DEFENSE
If you had to point to one major strength on this football team, it would have to be the deep group of linebackers, led by Joe Pawelek. The Bears are switching from a 4-2-5 to a 4-3 defense in Briles' first year on the job.

SCOUTING THE SPECIAL TEAMS
If the spring game is any indication, things look better as Shea Brewster kicked field goals of 41 and 28 yards and was 3-for-3 on extra points, while Derek Epperson averaged 47.8 yards on four punts. David Gettis is an exciting return man.

ROSTER REPORT

--RB Jacoby Jones ran for 53 yards on 12 carries in the spring game.

--A lengthy list of players, led by FS Jordan Lake, missed the spring game with injuries.

--John David Weed, who moved from QB to IR, suffered a broken hand in spring ball.

--Sam Sledge made a successful move from OL to DT, providing depth on the line.

--Antonio Johnson moved from DE to LB.

--WR Ernest Smith missed the last week of spring practice with mononucleosis.

--Three former Bears, CB Josh Bell (San Diego), LB Nick Moore (Cleveland) and LS Jonathan Weeks (Detroit), all signed free agent NFL contracts.

By Nostradamus. Entering my personal rankings as the second best conference coming into the 2008 season, the Big 12 has many good things to boast about. At the end of the 2007 season, they had four teams ranked in the final top 10 rankings.
They had two teams that played in BCS bowl games and three teams with serious National Championship considerations nearing the last two
