Commodores report: Getting inside
Vanderbilt's season came to an abrupt and disappointing end when the Commodores lost their last two games of the season, including a first-round NCAA Tournament game to Siena. Coupled with their loss to Arkansas in the SEC tourney and the end of the regular season, the Commodores lost four of their last six games, all in the month of March. But coach Kevin Stallings tried to put a positive spin on things. "I think that most will certainly think that March was very disappointing," Stallings said. "In terms of the season, you know, I really think that we probably overachieved in some respects. "I think if you look at the season as a whole, I think that this group got a lot out of itself. But, again, not enough defensively to where we could become great. We were good, but not where we could become great. Again, that's my responsibility, and my failing in this team." The Commodores were tough at home, where they were undefeated in 19 games but were only 4-6 on the road and 3-2 in neutral sites. The latter three wins came in the South Padre Island Invitational and the opener of the SEC tourney against Auburn. "This team was a special team this year," said Shan Foster, who became Vanderbilt's first career 2,000-point scorer in the final game. "We got a lot accomplished. Any time you're able to go 26-and-8, you know, that's obviously doing something great. "Unfortunately, we have to end it on a loss, but, you know, I think it was great for the guys coming back next year to be a part of, so now they know exactly how much they have to work to get back here and get further." Foster is one of three senior starters who will have to be replaced next season, however, as the Commodores have some rebuilding to do for 2008-09. Copyright (C) 2008 The Sports Xchange.
