NEW MEXICO BOWL -- Outside of the Orange Bowl, this might be the best quarterback matchup of bowl season. Mean Green signal-caller Mason Fine is averaging 311.2 passing yards per game, and Aggies' quarterback Jordan Love is tied for 10th in the nation with 28 touchdown passes. This comes down to motivation. Utah State lost coach Matt Wells to Texas Tech, while North Texas coach Seth Littrell spurned Kansas State to stay in Denton. That means a lot during bowl season.
NEW MEXICO BOWL -- Normally, caution is recommended for teams in the midst of a coaching change, as Utah State is with the departure of Matt Wells. However, with the spread plummeting three points and a substantial difference in talent, the Aggies are attractive here. They rank third in FBS in scoring and its sole straight-up losses were to Michigan State and Boise State. The Mean Green are potent, too, but dangerous WR Rico Bussey Jr. could be compromised with an ailing hamstring.
NEW MEXICO BOWL -- Both teams come in with strong defensive efforts all season long, but it's been the Utah State offense averaging 47 ppg that helped nine of its 12 games get Over the total. On the other side, North Texas only went Over once in 12 games. The final decision on the total here was how Utah State's offense was sluggish in its last two games, keeping both Under. Under is the top play Saturday.
NEW MEXICO BOWL - Both of these teams came up short in conference races, but proved to be a couple of the Group of Five's best. Utah State, however, will come into this game having lost head coach Matt Wells, both coordinators, and six other assistants to the job at Texas Tech. Meanwhile North Texas has its entire staff present, and even if both sides were at full strength, this number is just a little too large.
NEW MEXICO BOWL -- A great contrast in styles highlights this matchup between the Mean Green and the Aggies. North Texas' offense was a big reason why it upset Arkansas earlier in the year. During that same time, the Green were one of the better defensive football teams in C-USA. What has been consistent all season long has been the stellar point-of-attack play and overall defensive play of Utah State Look for the Aggies to get enough stops to steal away a few possessions from North Texas, using their excellent play along the offensive line to grind out a win.
