Put me down for the Pokes. As solid as the Hokies' defense might be, Oklahoma State has proven it can score early and often against even its toughest competition. The difference is that some of those teams could keep up, and I don't think Virginia Tech will be able to do so.
CAMPING WORLD BOWL (Orlando, Fla.) -- Look for Oklahoma State to use its high-powered offense Thursday to overmatch the Hokies, who are not accustomed playing from behind or in fast-paced games.
Virginia Tech comes in with a stellar defense that allowed 13.5 points and 305 yards-per-game which kept nine of its 12 games Under the total. That defense will be tested to the max by Oklahoma State's offense that scores 46 ppg and gains 578 ypg. Great defense beats great offense, right? Maybe, but the best angle here is Tech's offense against a bad OSU defense. That's where the total should be accelerated Over like OSU's last five games have gone. Great weather in Orlando, too, which should help the OSU passing game flourish. Go Over.
CAMPING WORLD BOWL (Orlando, Fla.) -- The Cowboys can make this a battle of quarterbacks very easily, and I trust the veteran Mason Rudolph over the freshman Josh Jackson of the Hokies. This is a game of styles. The Hokies would rather win with defense, while Mike Gundy's crew prefers point-a-minute football. The Pokes have been solid forcing mistakes with pressure up front, and will make one or two plays defensively to pull away in what will closely resemble a track meet.
CAMPING WORLD BOWL (Orlando) -- Defense wins games, as the maxim goes, but the difference is so significant between these offenses that some sayings can be ignored. Virginia Tech averaged 17 points in its last five games, a drought somewhat attributable to the loss of OT Yosuah Nijman (leg). He sits out this one, as does WR Cam Phillips (sports hernia). The Hokies were no offensive powerhouse even with them. Tech’s defense is stingy, but it has not faced the likes of QB Mason Rudolph, the country’s passing yards leader. Only two teams averaged more than the Cowboys’ 46.3 points per game. Ok-State’s defensive ranking of 71st is below par but not bad for the offensive-centric Big 12. It should be sufficient to keep the Hokies in the 20s.
CAMPING WORLD BOWL (Orlando, Fla.) -- Mason Rudolph has thrown for 4,553 yards and 35 TDs against nine picks, and I see him having another big game in this bowl. Oklahoma State has covered five straight non-conference games. While the Hokies are a worthy opponent, my projections show OSU winning by nine and covering 57 percent of the time. Lay the points.
The Cowboys have the third-best scoring offense in the country, while the Hokies bring a top-10 defense. VaTech has shut down most opponents completely, but three teams have scored at least 28 points. Only once has OkieState scored under 31, and it had at least 40 points in all but two games. My projections favor the unstoppable offense over the brick-wall defense. While the point spread pick is sound, I'll take the extra-safe bet of a Cowboys win straight up.
