Power Rankings: Even ill-fated gambles don't knock Stewart down

Updated March 31

How strong has Joe Gibbs Racing been through the first six races?

So strong that the lone driver of the JGR trio without a victory actually leads our Power Rankings.

In seasons past, if you'd have said JGR has two victories in the first six races, almost assuredly Tony Stewart would have been responsible for one of them. But with Kyle Busch having moved into the No. 18 ride in place of J.J. Yeley and Denny Hamlin having established himself as a winner in the No. 11, Stewart no longer carries the weight of JGR's success or failure on his shoulders.

Whatever expectations Gibbs had in making the move to Toyota have been met, if not exceeded in the early going.

Busch dominated the season-opening Daytona 500 before ultimately falling short of the victory. In his first four races for Gibbs he nabbed three top fives, including the first Cup victory for Toyota. He's had some hard luck the past couple of races, finishing 17th at Bristol and 38th Sunday at Martinsville.

Hamlin was in the opposite boat. He struggled at the start of the season before hitting stride the past couple of races, leading 98 laps and finishing sixth at Bristol and leading 82 laps and grabbing Toyota's second win at Martinsville. The victory at his home track came as a huge relief to the Virginia native.

"When you get so close to winning so many races and something bad happens or things just don't work out in your favor at the end and you end up losing a win, it's tough to maintain confidence," Hamlin said. "It's tough -- your self-esteem starts going down. It takes its toll on you -- last week was just like how many times do we have to go through this.

"I felt like we had a chance to probably win three in a row, but the first two races just had a lot of problems. A lot of thanks go the guy at TRD (Toyota Racing Development) to help support us at Joe Gibbs Racing to try to get our issues worked out. They don't have to -- those are issues within our race team that we had. For them to kind of take a lead role and say that they would do whatever it took to help us fix the problems -- that goes a long way. And that is what you look for in a manufacturer from those guys. And I couldn't be prouder to be with them."

And then there's Stewart. No doubt after seeing both his teammates win, Stewart is eager to pick up a trophy of his own, but he can take some solace in having the most consistent runs of the bunch. He leads the team with four top 10s, and even when he finished 43rd due to a blown tire at Las Vegas, he was running in the top 10 at the time. With a different bit of pit strategy, it could have been Stewart in Victory Lane at Martinsville.

"I screwed us today," said Stewart. "I pitted and took a gamble when we had 40 laps on tires. I thought everybody would come in, but if they didn't, I thought we might get a run and catch them. It didn't work out. I ended up losing 11 spots, I think, so it was a bad decision on my part."

Power Rankings after Martinsville:

POWER RANKINGS
CurrentDriverPrevious
1Kyle Busch1
No. 1 in our rankings and public enemy No. 1 for Jr. Nation. "It's just unfortunate circumstances for him (Dale Earnhardt Jr.) because he didn't get a win, and for me because now I've got to put up with it."
2Carl Edwards2
Not his best car this season, but managed to escape Richmond with a seventh-place finish.
3Denny Hamlin4
As dominant a run as you'll ever see, only to be done in by a leaky tire. "You can't whine about it," Hamlin said. "It just wasn't meant to be. God didn't want me to win today." I don't know, that kind of sounds a bit whiney to me.
4Dale Earnhardt Jr.5
If Hamlin doesn't stop on the track to bring out the caution, victory was all but his.
5Jeff Burton3
Received some damage in the big multi-car wreck, but soldiered on for an 11th-place finish.
6Clint Bowyer8
He was fortunate to get the win, no doubt about it, but it wasn't as if he didn't have a very strong car. He drove from 31st and into the top-five to be able to take advantage of the opportunity.
7Tony Stewart6
While his two Joe Gibbs Racing teammates (Busch and Hamlin) ran top five all night, he wallowed around 10th much of the race until his car came alive with some adjustments in the final 100 laps.
8Kevin Harvick9
Faded to eighth after running as high as third during the first half of the race, but still a good, solid top 10.
9Jeff Gordon10
It's not often he's happy with a ninth-place finish, but Saturday was one of those nights. He had to start 43rd after an ignition switch and fell a lap down during the early portion of the event.
10Jimmie Johnson7
He swept last year's events at Richmond but was never a factor Saturday -- only 63 laps in the top 15 -- and was eventually curtailed by the multi-car wreck.
11Greg Biffle11
After starting 23rd, he had made his way forward through the field -- as high as fifth -- but just past the midpoint of the race he said his brakes began to fade.
12Ryan Newman15
His luck may be turning around again with three top 10s in the past four races.
13Juan Pablo Montoya12
He was running his typical race hovering in the teens, but it appeared he simply lost it all by himself and spun into the wall.
14Kasey Kahne14
He was one of six drivers to run all 410 laps in the top 15, but his 10th-place finish was the worst of the six.
15Martin Truex Jr.16
A great night for the No. 1 team as they pick up their first top-five finish of 2008.
16Matt Kenseth13
Sometimes the surface stats are misleading. If you just take a quick look at the standings you see four top 10s and no DNFs and scratch your head at how he's 22nd in points.
17David Ragan18
Lost a lap while making repairs after he and David Gilliland got together trying to avoid a wreck and he could never get it back. Finished as the first car one lap down.
18Bobby Labonte19
He wasn't better than a 30th-place car the first-half of the race, but his crew made some great adjustments that allowed him to escape with a 13th-place finish.
19Brian Vickers17
Not a race he'll want to remember as he picks up his second-worst finish of the season (28th).
20Mark MartinNR
Four top 10s in seven starts. He has skipped three races, yet has more points than six drivers who've started all 10 races.

You did a pretty horrible job this week. I gotta agree you are starting to show signs of being biased. How can the top 3 points getters be 3rd, 7th and 9th in your power rankings. Without a doubt Jeff Burton should be number 1. He has as many top 5's and top 10's as Tony but has a win. Gre Biffle has as many top 5's and top 10's as Tony but because Biffle finished 20th he drops all the way to 9th? ...(more)

De Los Santos... like those guys on FOX are in love with Hendrick and Gibbs. Face it Roush and RCR have really stepped up their programs, and Harvick has been as consistent as anybody this year... in fact he will be your 2009 Sprint Cup Champion.

Even though Stewart is not in the win column you can never count him out as a great driver who will get his wins and good finishes this year .
